Assam: Jute Smuggling Allegedly Thrives Along Dhubri-Bangladesh Border

Assam: Allegations of an organised jute smuggling network operating along the India- Bangladesh border in Assam’s Dhubri district have raised concerns, with claims that jute is being brought into India illegally through international river routes. The alleged smuggling trade is reportedly taking place through Takimari, a border area in Dhubri, where cargo boats are allegedly being used to transport jute from Bangladesh into Assam. According to the initial report, the rise in jute prices this year has encouraged some traders in Dhubri to procure jute illegally from villages across the border and bring it into India for profit. Several villages on the Bangladesh side, including Khanabari, Kalahat, Chaudhurir Char, and Jhaukuthi, are reportedly witnessing a strong jute harvest this year. Taking advantage of the lower prices there, smugglers allegedly purchase jute in bulk and transport it by boat through open river routes to Takimari. From Takimari, the jute is allegedly moved to several river ghats in Dhubri, where some traders are accused of selling Bangladesh-produced jute in the local market. Local sources have alleged that a group of traders has built an organised network around the illegal jute trade in Dhubri. However, these allegations have not been independently verified. The alleged activity has also raised questions over the monitoring of the international river routes in the border district. Locals have questioned the role of the Agriculture Department and regulated market authorities, alleging that adequate action has not been taken to stop the trade. Residents have also expressed concern that unchecked movement of goods through international river routes could pose wider security concerns along the sensitive border. The allegations come at a time when jute prices have reportedly increased, making the illegal movement of cheaper jute from across the border potentially lucrative for traders. Authorities are yet to issue an official statement on the allegations. Also Read: Assam: 18,500 Packets of Foreign Cigarettes Seized in Kokrajhar
